Yes. State law and field ethics require social workers, counselors and other professionals to maintain a strict level of confidentiality. Staff members will NOT share your personal information or any part of your conversations with anyone else. Staff members will not divulge information about a student's sexual orientation, STD status, sexual activity, political ideology, religious beliefs (or lack thereof), sexual history, criminal history, health or other personal matters without the expressed consent of the student. In situations regarding drug abuse and pregnancy, confidentiality is limited up to the extent that it isn't life threatening or a health issue.
Students and parents should also be aware that there are three instances where confidentiality is NOT upheld: if a student makes a threatening statement about another person, threatens to hurt himself or herself or if the student is being hurt. All staff members are required by law to report the incident.
All staff members must keep sensitive information confidential.
Once again, students and parents should also know if a student makes a threatening statement about another person, threatens to hurt himself or herself, or is being hurt. All staff members are required by law to report the incident.
